Scarcity does something strange to how you hear other people's news.
A friend mentions a raise and something in you drops half an inch before you can catch it. It isn't meanness. It is a nervous system that has been doing sums for a long time and has learned to read any good fortune elsewhere as a subtraction from a fixed pile.
The pile isn't fixed, and their raise did not come out of yours. That takes a while to feel rather than merely know, and there is no shame at all in the gap between the two.
