People who lived through the worst decades of the last century are, oddly, not the most cynical you will meet. Talk to somebody who was twelve in 1944 and you often find a stubborn, unsentimental confidence that things improve, because they watched them improve.

Believing in a better future works less like a forecast and more like a posture. It changes what you are willing to start, given that most decent things take longer than the person starting them.

Nobody plants a slow-growing tree on the assumption that the garden is doomed. The belief comes first and the work is downstream of it.
