The daring part is rarely the action. It's letting yourself picture the far side — a normal Thursday, months from now, when this isn't the first thing in your head on waking.

Hope feels dangerous in the middle of something bad, because if you hope and it goes wrong you'll have been made a fool of twice. So people ration it. That's understandable, and a little is still worth spending. Imagining the ordinary Thursday costs nothing and it keeps the road open.
