Comparison sets your inside against other people's outsides, which is less a contest than a category error. The composed one across the table may be counting the minutes until they can leave. The one who spoke well may have rewritten his opening line eleven times on the train.

Nobody's face reports their pulse. Yours is not reporting yours either.
