Included in everything are the parts you'd crop out of a photograph, and the parts nobody photographs at all: the temper, the way you go silent when hurt, the thing you did in 2019.

Which is why this works better as the way a parent loves a difficult child than as an appraisal. The parent isn't claiming the kid is flawless. They're saying the love doesn't depend on the kid becoming easier.

That's the version a person can actually hold. Not approval of every trait, but a decision to stay on your own side while you work on a few of them. Nobody has ever improved anything about themselves by first agreeing to despise it.
