I love to fall in love with the same person, again and again, enjoying it as if it is for the first time every time.

At a party there is sometimes a moment when you see them across the room and, for half a second, don't recognise them. They are just a person talking, with a face, being liked by strangers.

That gap is where the re-noticing happens. Familiarity is efficient; it lets you stop looking. The price is that you can live with someone for twenty years and see a summary instead of a person.

Anything that breaks the summary helps. Watching them do their work. Hearing them tell a story you have never heard to somebody new.

Look for the half-second this week. It comes around more often than you would think.
