Groups set their own rules about what's funny, and the rules are invisible from inside. In one, the fastest way to get a laugh is at somebody's expense. In another, nobody has done that in months and it would land strangely.

Nobody chooses those rules deliberately. They form out of whoever is in the room and whatever gets rewarded there.

Which makes the choice of company one of the largest decisions available, at any age. You drift toward the normal of whoever you're with — not out of weakness, but because that is how anybody works out what normal is.
