What people remember buying is almost never the object.

It is the taxi home in the rain at the end of a day that had gone wrong, when the sensible thing was the bus and the bus would have finished you off. It is the ticket bought for somebody else so they could come too. It is the week taken off without a good reason.

The receipts look identical to every other receipt. What separates them is that the money got converted into something that would not otherwise have existed — an evening, a person's company, a stretch of not being tired.
