An aunt puts a folded twenty in your hand at the door and you push it back. She pushes it forward. This happens twice more before one of you gives in, and both of you consider it good manners.

Refusing money is taught early and thoroughly, especially to anyone raised to be no trouble. It surfaces later as difficulty naming a fee, or an urge to make it up to anybody who does you a kindness.
