Count what you would have to lose before things got genuinely difficult, and the number is usually larger than it feels. Leftovers in the fridge. A coat warm enough for the actual weather. Two or three people who would take the call at midnight without asking why.

Prosperity gets defined upward endlessly — there's always a version with more — which is why people at every income level describe themselves as just about managing.

Overflow is only visible from a standstill. It never shows up mid-comparison. Stop moving for a minute and take an honest inventory of what is already surplus.
