Support has a price and somebody pays it. The course you took, the year you earned less, the evenings you disappeared into a spare room: somebody covered the shifts, or the shopping, or the silence.

Encouragement is the cheap part. Believing in a person costs nothing at all. Rearranging your life around their unproven idea costs a great deal.

It is worth being specific about what was actually spent on your behalf, because it is usually more than the encouraging words that get remembered.

Ask what they gave up in the year you were chasing something. Then ask what they would like to chase next.
