Fires get banked, not extinguished. Coals are covered over at night, look dead by morning, and take a flame again with almost no coaxing.

You can test this in yourself after a genuinely terrible year. You still stopped for the dog with no collar. You still tipped too much when somebody looked exhausted. Nobody was watching and there was nothing in it for you.

Circumstance can bury the thing under a great deal of ash. It has no ability to put it out. Check for warmth before assuming it has gone.
