Watch somebody apologise while crying. Sorry, sorry, just a second — as though the crying were an inconvenience being inflicted on the room rather than something happening to them.

Anxiety usually arrives with that second layer attached: the discomfort itself, and then the case against being allowed to have it. Other people have real problems. This is nothing. You should be past it by now.

The second layer is the one that can actually be put down. Not the feeling — the tribunal. Accepting is not approving. It is declining to run a trial while the thing is still happening.
