A surprising number of people, asked to check, find their toes curled slightly inside their shoes for no reason available to them, with no idea how long it has been going on. They uncurl the instant they are looked at, which is the interesting part. Nothing was released. It was being held, and holding takes effort, and the effort stops the second attention shows up.
A good deal of what gets called tension behaves that way. Not stored anywhere. Actively maintained, quietly, at a small ongoing price, waiting for somebody to notice it.
