A circle is small by definition. That is the entire point of the shape.
Most people, asked who they would ring at four in the morning, get to four names and stop — and are slightly startled both by how short the list is and by who is not on it. The wide outer ring of acquaintances and half-friends is fine and costs almost nothing. The four are different. They set the weather. Being deliberate about that is not coldness; it is admitting the inner ring was always going to be tiny, and might as well be chosen.
