Sitting with someone in a hospital corridor and offering no solutions is a real skill. You stay. You don't tell them how to feel about it. Most people find two hours of that nearly unbearable.

Doing it for your own mind is harder. A thought arrives, jealous or frightened or small, and the reflex is instant management: I shouldn't be thinking that. The scolding feels like maturity. It's mostly avoidance in a good coat.

Feelings that get argued with tend to repeat themselves, the way anyone does when they haven't been heard. Staying long enough to find out what one is actually about is usually what finally lets it go.
