Most power goes unrecognized because it was spent on something that didn't feel heroic at the time. The two years you kept a household running through something awful. The couch you and a friend got up three flights of stairs by refusing, for forty minutes, to put it down.
Knowing your power isn't discovering a new capacity. It's counting an old one. People who have survived a great deal tend to describe it as what anyone would have done, which is modest and also inaccurate.
The counting matters because it changes the arithmetic on the next hard thing. You go into it as someone with a record rather than someone hoping.
