Looking for the good in somebody is usually just better observation. Most unpleasant behaviour turns out to be fatigue, fear or a bad hour, wearing the costume of a personality, and the person who assumes so is right more often than the cynic is.
It also has an odd effect on the other person. Address somebody as though they are the competent, decent version of themselves and they will, more often than chance would explain, go and be it.
The reverse works just as reliably, which is why certain people are noticeably worse around one particular relative.
None of this requires ignoring what someone has actually done. Deciding which version you speak to is not the same as being unable to see the other one.
