Forgiving yourself isn't the same as deciding it didn't matter. If it hadn't mattered, there'd be nothing there to forgive.

The version that holds keeps the facts and drops the sentence. You did the thing. It cost someone something, possibly you. And the ongoing punishment — the three a.m. replay, the flinch when the memory surfaces — has long stopped producing any benefit for anyone, including whoever you wronged.

There's a difference between a debt and its interest. Pay what can still be paid, where it can. Then stop servicing the interest. Nobody is collecting it, and it was never the same thing as being sorry.
