Money given with conditions attached is a different substance from money given. The conditions are usually well-meant — a worry about what it'll be spent on — and they turn a gift into a supervision.

Most of the world's giving happens between people who have very little, quietly, between cousins and neighbours, with no receipt and no follow-up question.

Wealth also slides. Somebody reading this is nearer to needing help than to having spare, and that's an ordinary place to be standing. Scale matters less than people think. What travels between two people is that one of them didn't ask what it was for.
