A lot of people carry a private superstition about quotas — that good stretches are drawn from a fixed account, and a long one means something is owed. Joy doesn't behave like a resource being drawn down. Nobody has yet used up their share and left less in the ground for next year. The account isn't real, though the fear of it is very old and very common.

Birthright is a claim about entitlement, not about ease. Getting there can be hard work in a hard year. Being allowed there never was.
